’Canes looking to learn fast
Liberty might have plenty of seniors on their wrestling roster this season, but that doesn’t mean they’re the most experienced group.
The Hurricanes come into the year with a few core wrestlers, but more question marks in the lineup in Brandon Hall’s third year at the helm of the program.
Senior Javien DeLeon (126-138) is the ‘Canes top wrestler coming back after placing fifth in the Super Regionals last year. DeLeon is the Hurricanes top prospect to reach Hershey this season, but senior Christian Reid (160) could also make a run to Hershey as one of Liberty’s top grapplers.
“Despite having several seniors in our lineup, we are an inexperienced dual meet team who will need to grow within the sport quickly in order to compete in the EPC and independent tournaments,” said Hall. “We have several wrestlers who welcome the responsibility of getting max bonus points for our team as we also look to minimize bonus from our opponents. Our schedule will give our wrestlers a great opportunity to progress throughout the season in order to peak for the post season.”
Other wrestlers to make an impact this year are Fr. Jasiah Pagan (106), So. Jack Evans (120), So. Kam Abboud (126), Sr. Chandler Drew (132-145), Sr. Cesar Acosta (132), Sr. Eddie Force (138-152), Jr. Ryan Santiago (145-152), Sr. Jo-Voni Grullon (189) and So. Levi Levy (285).
“As a program, we want to qualify and advance as far as possible in the team district tournament,” Hall said. “We also have a few experienced wrestlers who have set high goals for their post season.”
Liberty opened the season at the Boyertown Duals over the weekend and finished 3-2 with wins over Harry S. Truman, Interboro and Souderton. The ‘Canes suffered losses to the hosts Boyertown and Garnet Valley.
They open up their EPC slate this week with back-to-back tough matches, starting at home Wednesday against Bethlehem Catholic and then heading to Easton on Thursday.
They’ll then make the trek to Millersville for the Penn Manor tournament this weekend.
