Liberty boys look for bounce-back winter

Liberty’s basketball team is looking forward to a full season, but second-year head coach Nigel Long might be more eager after his first year at the helm was a COVID shortened campaign.

The Hurricanes finished last season 3-9, but return a seasoned core of players to what hopes to be an improved roster this winter.

“Going into year two, we are excited to build off of last year,” said Long. “We are a long, athletic, and a competitive group. Our success will be determined on how we come together as a group.

“We have a healthy mixture of upper and underclassmen, many of whom have had experience in the EPC. With a full schedule, we look forward to each opportunity for us to grow.”

Back for the Hurricanes are sr. guard Josh Farrell; sr. guard Joseph Barnes; sr. forward Nazjah Smith; jr. guard Nate Rivera; jr. guard Derek Wescoe; jr. forward Isaiah Huskey and so. forward Angel Holguin.

New comers include Sr. Forward Kuwasi Wellington; Sr. Guard Sarai Jean Luis; Sr. Guard Kenneth Ruiz; Sr. Guard J’uan Brown; sr. guard Landon Foster; jr. forward Axcel Kamanga; so. guard Caden Vermeulen and fr. forward Dywane Chess Jr.

“We look to get better each day,” said Long. “Our goals are to qualify for districts and the EPC tournament.”

The Hurricanes open the season on Saturday when they travel to Hatboro Horsham for a 7 p.m. tilt. They then begin EPC action on Dec. 14 at Nazareth.
