Liberty’s girls basketball team will play in its season opener on Dec. 10 at Emmaus with a balanced mix of returners and newcomers under first-year head coach Jarrett Carnes.
Some of the Hurricanes’ key returners are senior forward Erin Eisenhart, senior forward Tamia Bruce, junior guard Layla Orth, sophomore guard Emma Pukszyn, and sophomore guard Ruby Miller.
Eisenhart, Orth, and Pukszyn are this season’s captains.
“I expect these three to lead our team, communicate among the team, hold themselves and their teammates accountable, and have each others’ backs,” Coach Carnes said. “After nine official practices and one scrimmage, our team shows they have the potential to turn things back around for Liberty girls basketball if they put their minds to it and put the work in every day on and off the court.”
The Hurricanes had a busy offseason that included AAU ball, Catty Summer League, and the Awesome Fest Tournament in Allentown.
“We also had our strength and conditioning workouts with St. Luke’s and then had open gyms,” said Carnes.
Also on Liberty’s varsity roster are senior Vicky Oquendo, junior Maya Nieto, sophomores Abby Thompson, Jordan Thompson, and Julia Medaska, and freshmen Tula Sobrinski and Tehya Stone.
“I see our team challenging our opponents with our defense, hustling, and shooting,” Carnes said.
After Friday night’s game at Emmaus, the Hurricanes will travel to Kutztown the next day, and will have its home opener on Dec. 14 against Nazareth.
