No tax increase for borough residents in 2022

At the Nov. 10 Alburtis Borough Council meeting, there was no public comment or mayoral report. Mayor Kathleen Palmer said she was in quarantine due to close contact in a courtroom and tested negative for COVID-19.

There were 102 reported incidents in the monthly police report.

The meeting minutes of October and the November bills for payment were approved.

Councilman John Aleszczyk opposed the engineer bills, feeling not enough is being done for what is being spent.

A lot of work was recorded in the maintenance report. The maintenance department finished painting the dugouts and snack stand. Seal work was done, new lines were painted, as well as a variety of small touch-up jobs around the borough.

Several agenda items in administration were tackled.

The first item involved The Hills at Lock Ridge (aka the Fields at Lockridge). Two representatives from Jaindl Land Co. were in attendance to report they are working through a punch list of construction work for the property. The list was approved and a bond was released for the work.

In a follow-up from the last meeting, an estimate for new parking stall signs was received. Thirty signs were quoted at $150 each. Certain members of council felt 30 extra signs costing $4,000 would be way too much spending. Plus, they worried 30 extra signs would crowd the borough streets. The item received no support from council in a vote and was dismissed.

A two-bay swing set was discussed for purchase. The swing set location is still in question, but early thoughts were it could go by Alburtis’ baseball field. The swing set will cost $1,426.

Questions were raised on whether funds could be used for more than a four-person play item at the proposed location. After discussion, the swing set item was tabled for the next meeting. The location of the swings was a big concern.

The budget was approved for advertising.

“There will be no tax increase,” Council President Ron DeIaco proudly said. There was mention of a large sewage project that may be needed in the future.

“We have no loans. We don’t have any money to pay back,” DeIaco said, discussing the current situation of the budget. DeIaco felt the budget was in a great spot.

In the last agenda item, the National Night Out cost was $1,580, with donations of $95.

The meeting was then adjourned.

The next Alburtis Borough Council meeting will take place 7 p.m. Nov. 22. The meetings are located at borough hall, 260 Franklin St. Residents can attend the meeting virtually by going to the Alburtis Borough website.
