Field hockey, girls soccer travel to Easton

The Northampton field hockey and girls soccer teams will look to advance in their respective district tournaments when both teams play quarterfinal games at Easton tonight at 6 p.m. There is no admission charge to either game.

In field hockey, the K-Kids’ season has ended at the hands of the Rovers in districts each of the last three years. In 2020, it was a 1-0 heartbreaker in the district semifinals. In 2019, it was an agonizing 4-3 loss in the second overtime.

On Sept. 20, Easton won the regular season meeting between the teams 3-0. Despite being the fourth seed for districts, Easton finished as the runner-up to Emmaus in the EPC tournament, losing in the final 2-1.

Northampton has a puncher’s chance to pull the upset. They have a pair of first team EPC All-Stars in goalkeeper Kadee Schrader and Mid/Back Taylor Kranzley.

The Kids were shut out in 6 of their 8 losses this year, so it will be paramount to limit Easton to no more than 1 goal and then capitalize on their opportunities when they earn corners.

The girls soccer team is hoping for a replay of the 2019 district tournament when they beat Easton in the quarterfinals on the back of a 4-goal performance by then-sophomore Raine Korpics. That year the district champion was 7th seeded Freedom and that is where the K-Kids are slotted this time.

Northampton closed strong, winning their final three contests to finish the regular season 10-8. However, they missed the EPC tournament and have not played an official game in two weeks.

Easton won the EPC East Division with a 13-3-1 record and finished as the EPC tournament runner-up to Parkland, losing 3-1 in the final.

The Rovers won the regular season meeting between the two teams 6-4 on Sept. 25 at Easton. Korpics had a hat trick in the contest, but Northampton defense was leaky. The K-Kids were without stalwart centerback Kylie Gilliard in that game and head coach Michael Missmer has moved Julia Minnich to an outside back to shore up the Kids’ back line.

The four goals that Northampton scored were the most by any EPC or District XI team against the Rovers in a game this year. No one will be overly shocked if the K-Kids advance to the semifinals.
