Winter sport COVID protocols addressed

A discussion at the Oct. 18 human resource committee meeting was introduced by Russell Giordano, Human Resource director for the BASD. He presented the proposed protocol for the Board of School Directors to implement as they relate to participation in indoor sports for the remainder of the 2021-22 school year.

All BASD student athletes and coaches are strongly encouraged to receive the COVID-19 vaccine prior to the beginning of the winter season Nov. 19.

Vaccinated student athletes will not be required to wear a mask during athletic participation. Vaccinated student athletes will not be required to participate in COVID testing upon providing sufficient proof that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Unvaccinated student athletes will be required to wear a mask at all times during athletic participation. Additionally, unvaccinated student athletes will be required to undergo COVID-19 testing during their time of participation in an indoor sport.

Testing will be provided through the district, free of charge, for student athletes who are required to be tested. Testing will be subject to written parent/guardian consent.

Superintendent Dr. Joseph Roy explained that multiple discussions with community health advisors from St. Luke’s, Lehigh Valley Health Network and the Health Bureau all supported the proposed protocol. This was be an agenda item at Oct. 25, 2021 regular school board meeting.
