Dorn nears 200th win

Liberty’s field hockey team is off to a hot start and this week should also act as a milestone for head coach Jill Dorn.

In her 20th season at the helm, Dorn is in line to pick up her 200th career win if they can knock off East Stroudsburg North on Tuesday.

The Hurricanes are 3-1 after wins over Pleasant Valley and Allen last week, inching the veteran coach closer to a memorable milestone.

Despite the upcoming achievement, Dorn is happier about the team’s start and how they’re playing.

“I don’t think there could have been a better start of the season than watching the team perform in their first match against East Stroudsburg South,” said Dorn. “There was no one player that stood out and in a great game that’s all you can ask for. The girls were cohesive, connected and worked the ball down the field.”

In the team’s three wins this season, they’ve outscored the opposition 15-2, but in their lone loss to Stroudsburg, a 2-0 setback, Dorn feels her team learned valuable lessons from the defeat.

“Stroudsburg was disappointing, and the team recognizes it,” Dorn said. “You will have these ups and downs, undoubtedly, but this team needs to recognize their potential. Instead of worrying about past interactions with teams they’ve played, or knowing the personnel of the other team, they need to rely on their own talent, who we have, and consistently work to raise the bar of expectation.”

Outside of Tuesday’s contest against ESN, they’ll also have a date on Saturday against Whitehall (5-0), one of the best teams in the area.

Undefeated Parkland (4-0) and Nazareth (4-0) await them, giving them a grueling three-game stretch heading into next week.

“We will not count any team out or make assumptions on wins and losses,” she said. “We should expect that if we play to our potential that any game is possible. When we learn to do that, the wins will take care of themselves. We can’t settle for anything less than playing with the consistency we did in our opener.”

Freedom (1-4) and Bethlehem Catholic (0-3) are both struggling out of the gates, as the Pates have dropped three straight against Nazareth, Parkland and Pocono Mountain East. They have Becahi and Northampton this week to try and get some momentum back.

Becahi is still searching for its first win of the season, with Tuesday’s showdown against the Hawks giving them an opportunity to punch the win column.

They’ll also take on East Stroudsburg South on Thursday and Stroudsburg on Saturday.
