‘Disney On Ice’ back at PPL Center with ‘Mickey’s Search Party’

Mickey is back and glad to be.

So are the folks behind “Mickey’s Search Party” and PPL Center.

Feld Entertainment’s “Disney On Ice” returns to the PPL Center, Allentown, Aug 12-15, with “Mickey’s Search Party,” a skating and acrobatics adventure intended for the whole family.

The “Disney On Ice” show” is one of the first large-scale, non-hockey game, international touring events to return to the PPL Center since the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic shutdown.

“Star Wars: A New Hope” in concert, featuring the blockbuster movie accompanied by the Allentown Symphony Orchestra, Aug. 15, 2020, was postponed at PPL Center. A new date has not been announced.

“Trolls Live,” postponed from April 10-12, 2020, to Nov. 10 and 11, has been postponed again at PPL Center.

“An Evening With Michael Buble” was postponed from March 15 to Sept. 9 at PPL Center.

“The Doobie Brothers’ 50th Anniversary Tour,” with opening act, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, was postponed from June 26, 2020, to Aug. 1 and now to Oct. 29 at PPL Center.

Coming up at PPL Center: The Original Harlem Globetrotters, Aug. 16, and “Monster Jam,“ Aug. 27-29.

The tours of nine international “Disney on Ice” shows came to a halt because of coronavirus pandemic shutdown mandates by the CDC and health departments in the United States and international restrictions.

“Mickey’s Search Party,” which resumed touring earlier this year, is the second “Disney On Ice” show to begin touring again. Four more “Disney On Ice” shows are slated to back on the road this fall.

“To be back working on this show, with this incredible cast and talent, is something that I’m personally so grateful for,” says Adam Loosley, Performance Director and Artistic Director at “Disney On Ice.”

“It’s pretty fantastic to get the opportunity to be back when so many shows and live entertainment are still trying to get back on their feet. Feld Entertainment and Disney on Ice have done a really good job during a challenging time,” Loosley said in a phone interview from his home in Tampa, Fla.

Those in entertainment, including music groups, actors, entertainers and the venues in which they perform have been on hiatus for about 15 months because of the pandemic shutdown.

“I’m glad to be back, both on the ice with the talented cast, but also with all the talented technicians behind the scenes,” Loosley says. “It’s an exciting time.”

Loosely, born and raised in Ontario, Canada, has a background in figure skating, theater and directing. He competed nationally for Canada. He’s had a 12-year career with “Disney on Ice,” in roles that include Principal Performer, Character Performer, Specialty Act, and Live Host, as well as six years as Performance Director. He has toured with the show in more than 35 countries.

In “Mickey’s Search Party,” Tinkerbell gets captured and Mickey and his friends, along with two hosts, Alex Allen and Isabella Newhuis, lead the audience on a journey to save Tinkerbell and fill a magic meter along the way.

Belle, from “Beauty and the Beast,” Princess Moana, characters from Pixar’s “Toy Story” and “Coco,” Elsa from “Frozen,” Ariel and Eric from “The Little Mermaid,” and other beloved Disney characters round out the cast of 54 performers.

“The finale is a Disney extravaganza full of characters, all of your favorites,” says Loosley.

Mickey Mouse, a cartoon character created in 1928 by the Walt Disney Company, is one of the most recognizable fictional characters in the world.

“You’ll see families light up when they see Mickey Mouse,” says Loosley. “And he really does lead the way in this production.”

“Mickey’s Search Party” has toured the U.S., Mexico and Canada.

“We do have plans to tour through Asia in the next season. Japan, Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand are on our list of places to go next. And most likely, a European and South American tour to come in the future.”

Loosley says the cast has a wide range of skills. In addition to a superior class of figure skaters, there are stunt performers and acrobats.

“They literally elevate the performance and ‘The Wow Factor.’ We have acrobats tumbling through the air, flying on a Spanish web, on sway poles. We have tumblers on a tumbling track.”

The acrobats glide on hover boards across the ice. Eric and Ariel (“The Little Mermaid”) perform a strap routine 20 feet in the air as a tandem ensemble. There are freestyle skaters in a skate park ramp setting, doing flips in the air.

“You get a very eclectic performance of really diverse and talented cast members,” says Loosley.

Ice skating appeals to people of all ages, across all generations and cultures.

“Skating for me has always kicked it up a notch because you add this ability to flow with that speed,” says Loosley.

“You can watch a beautiful dance and it can cover a whole stage, but our stage is huge. It’s an arena. And it allows us to push and make everything more exciting. It makes the costumes move differently.

“It allows us to reach people who are further away because the space that we’re filling with our energy is an arena-sized area. You have to perform differently. It has to be big, exaggerated, and exciting.

“When you put those blades on our feet, all of a sudden everything is elevated because of the speed and the flow. It kicks it up a notch. It’s a good vibe.

“[Disney on Ice] is something that’s super-positive in a time that it can be challenging to find those uplifting, inspiring, positive things for families. I’m happy to be a part of one of the first to provide that,” says Loosley.
