Karl W. Millhouse

Karl W. Millhouse, 87, of Allentown/Lower Macungie Township, died Aug. 4, 2021. He was the husband of Shirley (Jenkins) A. Millhouse, who died in 2001. Born in Allentown, he was the son of the late John J. Millhouse and Mattie (Kershner) Millhouse.

He was a member of St. John’s EC Church, Allentown. He loved to sing and was a member of the choir, wherein he loved to sing solos.

He and his wife met at Allentown High School. He was a linebacker on the varsity squad and his wife was the captain of the cheerleading team.

Upon graduation in 1952, he joined the U.S. Navy. He served as an air crewman aboard the USS Princeton during the Korean War. He left the Navy in 1956 to work at Lockheed Aircraft Co. He eventually went to Arizona to work in the underground missile silos.

He worked in the insurance business upon returning to Allentown and later at Twin County and Service Electric. Not liking the cold weather, he opted for an indoor position with Mack Trucks. In 1969 he and his wife became owners and operators of Millie’s Market until 1975. In 1977, the couple opened up their home and hearts to families in need of affordable daycare. In 1996 he retired from Schaffer/Stroh’s where he worked as a utility worker.

He was a coach for Mountainville’s football and wresting teams while his son was eligible to play. His entertainment center held three televisions so he could watch a car race, golf or just another sport venue, except tennis!

He passions were playing cards, games, traveling and his grandson, Michael.

He visited every state in the Union, but because of health concerns could not travel to the remaining two of seven continents. His favorite trips were a river cruise from Amsterdam to Istanbul and the trip he considered “the trip of a lifetime,” which included stops in Athens, Egypt and Saudi Arabia and ended in Dubai.

If he heard a family member or family friend was in need, he stepped in to help in any way he could. Whether it be paying for funerals or giving money to people needing a helping hand.

He is survived by a daughter, Karla Milkovitz; a grandson, Michael and his wife, Joelle (Dziedzic) Milkovitz; a great-grandson, Mason; sisters, Bonnie Klingel and Sandra Blank; a sister-in-law, LaRue Schmidt. He was predeceased by a son, John J. in 1988; brothers, Richard in 1970 and Donald in 2012.

Contributions may be made to St. John’s ECC, 405 N. Jerome St., Allentown, 18109.

Arrangements were made by the Stephens Funeral Home, Inc., Allentown.
