ClenRoy E. Geist

ClenRoy E. “Crazy Elmer” Geist, 86, of Alburtis, local entertainer and performer with The Outlaws, died Aug. 7, 2021, in his residence, surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of Diane L. (Burk) Geist, whom he married May 17, 1969. Born in Alburtis, he was a son of the late Elwood A. and Estella M. (Stewart) Geist.

He was employed in various capacities including many years with D&C Spinosa, Allentown and Wagner Lightning, Boyertown. He retired in 1997 after suffering a stroke.

He was of the Lutheran faith.

He began his entertainment career at age 13 when he joined his father and older brother performing in minstrel shows in Longswamp. At age 14, he became a member of a local country group, Earl Keller and the Melody Rangers. He continued to sing and do comedy with that group for 19 years using the stage name of “Elmer.” In 1968 he joined Shorty Long and the Santa Fe Rangers and his stage name was changed to what he was best known by – Crazy Elmer.

In 1977 he began performing with The Outlaws. He continued to perform with The Outlaws for 43 years. He was very proud when his grandson Kyle joined the group as a vocalist and lead guitarist. Beginning in 1997, in addition to performing with The Outlaws, he began appearing at Hunterdon Hills Playhouse with The Tim Gillis Band, which also played at Split Rock Lodge and various Atlantic City casinos. He performed at Penn’s Peak in the Branson Fever Show which included Dave Rehrig’s tribute to Conway Twitty, as well as with The Rehrig Brothers Band at the Carbon County Fair. In addition he entertained solo over the years as a stand-up comedian at banquets and social events, as well as Grundsow Lodge meetings, Fersommlings which were performed in the Pennsylvania Dutch dialect.

His entertainment career spanned over 72 years during which he shared the stage with Conway Twitty, George Jones, Dolly Parton, Ray Price and Willie Nelson. His favorite performance venue was the Pillow Fire Company Carnival where he appeared annually for 63 consecutive years.

He was an avid fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and Philadelphia Eagles. Watching the Eagles win Super Bowl LII was one of the happiest days of his life. He loved spending time with his children; grandchildren and was looking forward to being a great-grandfather.

He is survived by his wife; children, Brenda S. and her husband, Terry R. Isamoyer, Cheryl Spiece, Matthew C. and Tara D.; grandchildren, Kyle Isamoyer and his wife, Jami, Heather and her husband, Joe Founds, Austin Isamoyer, Makayla, Nyssa; two great-grandchildren on the way; a sister, Irene F. and her husband, Warren W. Wessner; brothers, Walter A. and Ernest E. and his wife Lucille and their families; mother-in-law Gladys (Lilly) Burk. He was predeceased by sisters, Joyce C. Moyer, Linda M. Miller; a brother-in-law, Leonard Miller and a sister-in-law, Virginia (Derr).

A visitation will be held 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 13 in the Ludwick Funeral Homes, Inc., 333 Greenwich St., Kutztown. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family.
