EHS names student of the week

Q. In what grade are you currently enrolled?

A. I graduated from Emmaus High School in June.

Q. Please provide the first names of your family members: parents, siblings and pets.

A. My mom is Geraldine and my dad is Christophe. I have a younger sister named Mathilde. Unfortunately, we do not have any pets.

Q. What was your favorite subject? Why?

A. My favorite subject was math. There’s an element of puzzle solving to a lot of math problems that I really enjoy. I also like the logic behind a problem when I fully understand it.

Q. Have you received any special awards or recognition?

A. I received a few awards for academic excellence in all of my previous years at EHS. I received one in ninth grade, one in 10th and one in 11th.

Q. Were you involved in any extracurricular activities? How did COVID-19 impact these activities?

A. Last year I joined the Interact Club at EHS. I really enjoyed it and being able to volunteer with other people I already knew was really fun. Unfortunately, because of COVID-19, a lot of end of the year activities for this club ended up being postponed. The club was trying to figure out how to properly give back to the community during this pandemic, as volunteering en masse was a lot more difficult. I play piano outside of school and not being able to meet face-to-face with my teacher was difficult. We had weekly FaceTime sessions, but it wasn’t the same atmosphere as if we were still able to meet in person.

Q. What do you consider your biggest challenge to date?

A. I think my biggest challenge to date would probably be the pandemic. A lot of aspects of my life have changed since March. I think it was especially difficult for seniors; we had to adapt to a completely different style of learning from what we were used to only a year before most of us leave for college. We also had to be on top of college applications, as we couldn’t meet with guidance counselors or teachers as easily. Not being able to socialize with people in school was also a bit frustrating. It was hard to find motivation when everything built up over the last 12 years in school suddenly flipped.

Q. What is your next goal after high school?

A. For now, my next goal after high school is to attend college. Hopefully, when I’m there, I’ll be able to get a more clear outlook on what I want my future to look like.

Q. Whom do you admire? Why?

A. I admire my parents. They both moved to America in hopes of finding jobs, leaving a lot of people behind in France. Although their journey was undoubtedly easier than what others may face, I still think it takes a lot of guts to move halfway across the world only in hopes of finding a steady job.

Q. For what would you like to be remembered?

A. I would like to be remembered for my kindness to others. I want to leave a positive impact on those around me.

Q. Do you have any advice for your peers?

A. I think school feels really difficult and frustrating for a lot of people right now. I want to encourage my peers to make sure they’re watching after their own health, whether it’s mental or physical. We’re not alone during these times and confiding in others can help ease our own pains, even if it’s just a little bit.
