Ronald H. Rieder

Ronald H. Rieder, 88, of Salisbury Township, died June 29, 2021. He was the loving husband of Carol (Marone) Rieder for 35 years. Born in Taylor, he was the son of the late Helen (Roche) and Herbert Rieder.

He was a graduate of Taylor High School, East Stroudsburg State Teachers College, Lehigh University and attended Penn State University, Villanova University and San Diego State University for graduate studies.

He served his country honorably in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1954 to 1956.

He began his teaching career as a science teacher in the East Penn School District in 1956. Later he became assistant principal of Emmaus Junior High School, Eyer Junior High School and Emmaus High School. He also worked as acting principal of Shoemaker Elementary School. He learned the names of thousands of students during his 37-year career and was always happy when students remembered him with invitations to reunions or other events.

An avid tennis player, he looked forward to joining friends on the courts every Wednesday and Friday and then going to breakfast at the Brass Rail.

He dreamed of seeing all of the major tennis tournaments and went to the U.S. Open for over 25 years, later traveling to the French Open, Wimbledon and the Australian Open.

He loved to walk and ride his bike. He disliked going to the beach but loved walking the boardwalk in Ocean City, N.J. He was often seen walking or biking 10-15 miles every day when he was there. He was happy to spend an afternoon at the mall and eating a hot dog at Dunderback’s or Yocco’s. He and his wife enjoyed traveling across the United States and also visited many countries.

A people person, he always found someone he knew and enjoyed talking to them wherever he was. He loved animals and until recently always had a dog in the house. He loved Elsa, Miss Mittens, Snickers and especially Jingles and Jitterbug.

He was a member of the Pennsylvania Association School Principals and the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees. He was a firm believer in membership in the Smithsonian Institute and the National Parks Association. He visited almost all of the national parks in his lifetime.

He is survived by his loving wife; children, Randal (Cheryl), of West Chester, Mark (Lori), of Brentwood, N.H., Kathy Schoenen (Rob), of Shillington and Dana Hinson (Paul), of Franklinville, N.J.; grandchildren, Caitlin and Kevin Hinson, Trevor and Jay Schoenen, Sean, Rachel, Mathew, Jonathan, Nicole, Luke, Emily; nephews, Anthony Marone, Noel and Jerry; a niece, Nina Marone; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law Anthony and Deborah Marone; many cousins in the Scranton area and family from a previous marriage. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert and former wife, Laura.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. July 8 in the Schantz Funeral Home, P.C., Emmaus, A viewing will be held 7 to 8:30 p.m. July 7 and 10 to 11 a.m. July 8 in the funeral home.
