LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Summer hoops season continues

The LVHN Jamfest was held over the weekend and Nazareth came away with the championship crown following a 53-44 win over Gov. Mifflin. The 16-team tournament featured two Bethlehem teams as well, as Bethlehem Catholic and Freedom both took part in the event going 1-2 in tournament play.

The Hawks lost to Northampton and Pocono Mountain West, sandwiched by a 61-55 win over Dallas. Head coach Scott McClary has been happy with the progress of his team this summer over the past two weekends of tournament play.

“I felt very good about our performance over both weekends at the varsity level,” he said. “We competed very well with nationally ranked teams in Philly Live 1 and 2. The local games in which our varsity played, we won. When we had to send our JV guys, we did not win, but that was expected. We are now dealing with some injuries which will leave us shorthanded for the remaining summer league games, but that gives other players some opportunity to play and grow.”

Freedom fell to Gov. Mifflin in their opener and came back with a 46-36 win over Roberto Clemente before bouncing out of the tournament in heartbreaking fashion, as Palmerton topped them 38-37 with a buzzer-beater defeat.

Both teams will continue their summer action this week with the Cedar Beach Summer League. Becahi sits tied in fourth place at 4-2 in the Large School Division and Freedom was 4-3 coming into the week. Liberty is 3-3 and a spot behind Freedom in the standings.
