LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Mixed results from Bash at Beach

It was a mixed bag of results at the Cedar Beach Basketball Showcase for Bethlehem’s local teams over the weekend, as Liberty, Freedom and Bethlehem Catholic each took part in the event.

The Hurricanes got the most out of the event going 2-2 in the double elimination tournament after losing their opener 55-52 to Berks Catholic. They followed with wins over Northwestern (46-18) and Exeter (44-37) before dropping their final bout of the tourney 53-20 to Cedar Cliff.

Freedom and Bethlehem Catholic each went 1-2, as the Hawks topped Berks Catholic 51-39 in their initial contest before dropping their next two 65-23 to Northampton and 70-48 to Cedar Cliff. Despite an earlier exit than he hoped for, head coach Scott McClary was just happy to have his team playing together again in the summer.

“We are always excited to participate in these local events,” McClary said. “We were hoping to get as many games together as possible to continue to develop chemistry on both offense and defense.

“We participated in the prestigious Philly Live Open recruitment period on Saturday, so we had to split our squad for any games at Cedar Beach.”

Freedom lost their opener to Emmaus 62-43 before bouncing back with a 47-38 win over Ephrata. They were then eliminated with a 53-50 loss to Boyertown.

Head coach Joe Stellato’s teams have always enjoyed the summer path at Cedar Beach and while this year’s tournament didn’t push them all the way through Sunday’s late slate of games, it was an opportunity for the team to build cohesion.

“I have always made a big deal out of the summer tournaments with my players,” Stellato said. “This allows us to see some other teams that we normally don’t play and allows us to see how we stand up against the teams in the EPC.”

Parkland won the boys tournament knocking off Northampton in the finals.
