Firefighters train with foam

PRESS PHOTO BY JIM MARSH Western Salisbury Volunteer Fire Company firefighter James Caliendo familiarizes himself with the unique fire suppression techniques needed in fighting a fire with a foam retardant in place of water June 7 on Swain School property near the fire company's Swain Station. Most fire situations require only water for suppression, but in some situations chemical foam is a better choice. Since such real fire situations where foam is called for are so infrequent, periodic training in foam handling characteristics is necessary.
