Arts in the Plaza event set for July 28

On July 28 at Coplay Borough’s Community Plaza, located at North Second and Chestnut streets, the borough has a twin-billed event planned for 6:15-9 p.m.

The Jeni Hackett duo will be performing its brand of eclectic music as part of the Coplay summer entertainment series, in conjunction with an inaugural event titled Arts in the Plaza.

Arts in the Plaza coordinator Keith Sodl, a member of the borough’s parks and recreation committee, is assembling Coplay artists to convey their talents throughout the evening.

Whether it be painting, drawing, glassblowing, fabric arts, wood carving or wood burning, jewelry art or artistic photos, artists are invited to show off their talents at no cost to them.

Sodl, an artist of note in his own right, has completed a number of paintings showing historic buildings in Coplay. His passion for art is palpable, and his desire to create an enduring cultural event is evident.

Sodl is quick to note this is not a “craft show.” It is an art exhibition. He sees this as an opportunity for exposure for both young and seasoned artists to show their work. His long-term view is to recreate Coplay into a mini-arts mecca.

This arts concept will be a new adventure for Coplay, whose main fair is its annual Coplay Community Days festival and the St. Peter Roman Catholic Church annual picnic.

Although originally billed as an event for Coplay artists, Sodl noted it is open to those who were born in Coplay but left the borough, Coplay residents or for those who transplanted into Coplay from other areas.

Sodl also hinted a Whitehall or Northampton artist participating may be a possibility.

“There are many people doing some form of art. The goal is to create a venue for them to show their talent and meet other artists,” Sodl said.

His hope is the Arts in the Plaza is a success that could be parlayed into a communitywide arts festival in the future and; thereby, possibly, changing the borough’s current slogan, “An Opportunity Community,” to something of a cultural, artistic theme - perhaps “Experience Beautiful; Experience Coplay Art.”
