Northampton Farmers Market has new produce vendor

Pat Knopf, director of Northampton Farmers Market, is planning the 2021 season.

Planning is in its early phases, she noted. Her concern is the recent increase in COVID-19 community spread might prevent full participation.

The scheduled opening is set for 3-6:30 p.m. May 11 at Municipal Park, Laubach Avenue and Smith Lane.

Knopf expressed delight that she secured a new produce vendor for the upcoming season. She also expects a cider maker, a winery and a distillery present at the market. Other vendors include a baker, a produce farmer who also sells chicken, beef and pork and a possible peanut butter vendor.

The Northampton Farmers Market is planned to continue to Sept. 21.

Looking at trends, Knopf discussed the impact of community-supported agriculture. A CSA is a community of individuals who pledge support to a farm operation, so the farmland essentially becomes a community farm.

Individuals agree to purchase vegetables produced by the farm on a weekly basis at a reduced price to assist the farm, have local produce for the individuals’ family and share risks and benefits of food production.

Knopf’s concern is CSAs may develop relationships with local farmers that will reduce the farmers’ willingness to staff local farmers markets.
