Three properties in a row approved

The Historical and Architectural Review Board awarded certificates of appropriateness to Bruce Campbell for three row houses at the April. 7 virtual meeting.

The houses, 234, 236 and 246 E. Wall St. are located in the same row and required similar work.

Campbell was permitted to replace existing roofing and repaint the already painted brick and trim on all three properties.

He was advised by Vice Chair Marsha Fritz to remove the decorative shutters from 234 E. Wall St. instead of painting them. She explained they are non-functioning and out of proportion.

Chairperson Beth Starbuck encouraged Campbell to paint the cast iron basement grill the same color as the storm door and reinstall it at 236 E. Wall St.

Campbell was instructed to repair and restore the out-of square entrance door to 246 E. Wall St. The new shingles are to match what is on the existing rear and front porch roofs.

Homeowner Glenn M. Prize was granted a COA for enclosing his sleeping porch at 23 E. Church St. The project involves replacing screening and a railing of the second floor east-facing porch, as well as the existing vinyl siding with white smooth 4-inch plank James Hardi board siding.

Permission was granted for removal of a small third floor window in its entirety on the north wall of the porch and covering the void with cement-like siding. The porch’s second floor window is to be replaced with a similar style as a first floor window on the house.

Prize was also allowed to relocate a downspout at the back of the home.

The voting on all proposals was unanimous.

The Historical and Architectural Review Board regularly meets the first Wednesday of every month to review all exterior changes proposed to buildings in the Bethlehem Historic District north of the Lehigh River. When a proposed project receives a certificate of appropriateness from the board, applicants must wait for city council to vote on it before proceeding.
