Boys get a key win

With four games under their belt, it would be safe to assume Northampton didn’t have any monumental games yet with a long haul still ahead.

This time around, though, their fourth game was pivotal.

The Konkrete Kids gained a much-needed 4-2 victory at Easton April 10, one that was their first of the season (1-3).

“That was huge,” said Kids’ head coach Mick Sugra. “We have the capability to do well, and we did that.”

“In our first two games, we gave up 15 walks and had four hit batsmen. We gave up 22 extra outs. We pitched better against Nazareth, but we only had two hits.”

Against Easton, lefthander Cam Fisher allowed two runs and two hits with five strikeouts and two walks over six innings. Will Erie pitched the final inning.

“He (Fisher) pitched really well,” added Sugra. “When our pitching is strong, we are a different team. We have had good pitching in our last two games.

“We need to put it together. We are still having errors on defense, and the two runs against Easton were unearned.”

Sugra believes his team still has to find its niche.

“We are still looking for our identity,” he stressed. “We have to get more locked in, and they have to see what’s in front of them.

“They have to focus on the here and now. Good teams consistently make plays.”

Sugra has been pleased with the play of freshman outfielder Logan Higgins, who has been hitting and playing well in the field.

“We saw some talent there,” stated Sugra. “He was in competition for the job, and he won it.

“He has a high motor and is always hustling. He has been a major contributor to the team, and has made some big plays as a freshman.”

After a rainout Monday in the rematch with Easton, Northampton has a challenging rest of the week with four games in as many days. The Kids will host Freedom Wednesday, Easton Thursday, travel to Freedom Friday, and host Parkland Saturday.

“This is a big week for us,” said Sugra. “We have had two better games, and we had a chat with these guys.

“We’ll see what happens.”
