Rev. George F. Spieker

The Rev. George F. Spieker, 90, of North Catasauqua, died April 10, 2021. He was the husband of Rebecca Keller Spieker. Born in Emmaus, he was the son of the late Rev. Paul and Marian (Stager) Spieker.

He graduated from Emmaus High School in 1948, Muhlenberg College in 1952 and The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia in 1957. He was ordained May 26, 1957 and was the fourth consecutive generation of Lutheran pastors in the Spieker family. His great-grandfather, grandfather and father were ordained Lutheran clergymen. He retired in 1993 and served as a visitation pastor of St. Peter’s, Bethlehem, retiring in 2012. In retirement his primary church membership was at St. John’s, Coplay and his associate church membership was at St. Paul’s, Catasauqua.

He was a veteran in the U.S. Army. He served in Korea 15 months, was awarded the Bronze Star and attained the rank of sergeant first class.

He was a member of Coplay Post 426 of the American Legion. He held membership in the Emmaus Historical Society, the Lehigh County Historical Society, the Lutheran Historical Society of Eastern Pennsyvlania, Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Association and Minsi Trails Council, Boy Scouts of America.

He was registered with Boy Scouts more than 55 years and held many positions. Currently he had been on the council advancement committee and the council advisory committee. He received the Silver Beaver Award from the Council in 1984, the North Valley District Owl Award in 1978, the North Valley District Award of Merit in 1982 and the Lamb Award by the Lutheran Church in 1993.

He is survived by his wife; a son, David and his wife, Mary; a daughter, Jane Ann and her fiancé, Samuel Grim; grandchildren, Denise, Jennifer Kibler and Daniel; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Updegrave, of Reading; two nieces and a nephew.

Memorial contributions are strongly suggested to St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church at the address below.

Services will be held 7 p.m. April 15 in St. John’s Lutheran Church, 18 S. Third St., Coplay, where his family will receive guests 5 to 6:45 p.m. Properly worn facial coverings and social distancing will be required. Arrangements were made by the Gilbert Funeral Home of Whitehall.
