Dr. Carl K. Newhart

Dr. Carl K. Newhart, 98, of Naples, Fla., and of Catasauqua, died Feb. 21, 2021, at Lehigh Valley Health Network inpatient hospice, Allentown. He was the husband of Marlene G. (Edelman) Newhart for 35 years.

Born in Hokendauqua, he was a son of the late Dr. Carl J. and Norma (Knerr) Newhart.

He was a Whitehall High School graduate, where he was a member of the school’s first marching band. He later played professionally. He was an undergraduate of Muhlenberg College. He earned a dental degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

He was, during World War II, a navy dental officer. He was in the Naval Reserve for 26 years and retired as a commander.

He was a past member of the scientific staff of Allentown Hospital.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Naples, Fla.

He was a past president of the Catasauqua Area School District school board, Whitehall Exchange Club, Catasauqua Building and Loan Association and of Catasauqua Chamber of Commerce. He was a past chairman of the Catasauqua Civil Service Commission and a past treasurer of Lehigh Carbon Community College.

He was a director of Cement National Bank. He was a member of the American Legion, the Retired Officers Association of Naples and of the associate board of Pittsburgh National Bank. He was a Mason. He was a member of Glen Eagle Golf and Country Club, Naples.

He is survived by four sons, Alan K. of Dunedin, Fla., Dr. Scott G. of Idaho, Kent C. of Whitehall and Brian J. of Kingsport, Tenn.; a brother, Richard of Cooper City, Fla.; four granddaughters, Alice O’Brien, Heidi Hankins, Jessica Newhart and Jennifer Newhart; two stepgrandchildren, Todd and Damian Newhart; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

There will be a calling time 10-11 a.m., followed by a service 11 a.m., March 5 at the funeral home, 327 Chestnut St., Coplay, 18037.
