Dale Alan Augenstein

Dale Alan Augenstein, 73, of Macungie, died Feb. 22, 2021, at Lehigh Valley Hospice after a long and courageous battle with cancer and with his wife of 50 years, Maureen, by his side. Born in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Elmer and Carolyn (Dressler) Augenstein.

He earned a bachelor of science, master of science and doctorate in mineral processing engineering at Penn State University where he was recognized as a Centennial Fellow in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences in 1996. Upon graduation he went on to begin his career at Bethlehem Steel Research Department. Four years later he moved on to the K&J Coal Company in Westover, where over the course of 29 years he became president and part owner, and in 1993 served as chairman of the Pennsylvania Coal Association. After leaving there he and his wife returned to the Lehigh Valley where they owned and operated Glass Doctor of Lehigh Valley for seven years before fully retiring.

He loved the outdoors and was an avid fly fisherman and enthusiastic fan of Penn State football and wrestling.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Liesel, and her husband, Michael Evans; a grandson, Cameron, of Hummelstown; a sister, Lois Smock, of Pittsburgh; many nieces, nephews, great-nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by siblings, Joann Donnelly and Roy and Allen.

A memorial service will be held at Concordia Lutheran Church, 2623 Brookside Road, Macungie, 10:30 a.m. March 6, with visitation 10 a.m. Strict COVID-19 restrictions will be followed; everyone must wear a mask and practice social distancing. A livestream of the service will be available on YouTube, Concordia Lutheran Church, Macungie.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Stephens Funeral Home, Inc., Allentown.
