School board approves 2021-22 calendar

The Parkland School Board has approved the calendar for next year.

The first day for students in the 2021-22 term will be Aug. 30.

Classes will be in session four days that week. Students will be off for the Labor Day holiday on Sept. 3 and 6.

Teachers will start their school year with professional development time on August 24, 25, and 26.

Students will have 183 days of classes; teachers will have 190 days, culminating June 9, 2022, the last day of school.

The Thanksgiving holiday is scheduled for Nov. 25, 26, and 29.

Winter vacation runs Dec. 24 through Dec. 31, with classes resuming Jan. 3, 2022.

District holidays include Presidents Day and the Friday before Easter.

Schools will be closed April 18, 2022, the Monday after Easter, and May 30, Memorial Day.

Teachers will have seven days for professional development.

In another matter, the board approved Thomas Derhammer as director of technology, effective June 12.

He will oversee the 40 staff members in the technology category and will have responsibility for the department’s budget.

The board also approved Edward Kobus as assistant director of technology, effective June 12.

Both individuals held previous positions in the technology department.

Derhammer will assume some of the technology responsibilities of Tracy Smith, assistant to the superintendent for operations, who has announced plans to retire.
