Jim Brickman joined by Olivia Newton-John in Valentine’s concerts State Theatre benefit

Jim Brickman, award-winning pianist and songwriter, will celebrate the Valentine’s Day weekend by performing five concerts that will be live-streamed to benefit 75 United States venues.

One of the venues is the State Theatre Center for the Arts, Easton, where Brickman performed in 2007.

Brickman’s “Love by Request” concerts will be streamed at 9 p.m. Feb. 12 and 7 and 10 p.m. Feb. 13 and 14.

Olivia Newton-John is guest vocalist.

It’s the second time that Brickman is presenting concerts from his Cleveland, Ohio, studio to benefit theaters shut down by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

In December, Brickman did 50 “Comfort and Joy at Home” concerts, raising more than $100,000, for venues, including Miller Symphony Hall, Allentown, which shared in a portion of the proceeds.

“It was really great,” Brickman says in a phone interview.

”My philosophy about this is if I can’t be there, I’ll do this instead. The local communities have always been so supportive, I felt really strongly that I wanted to give back.”

Brickman wants the concerts to have the same feel as an in-person concert. That’s why he is doing each one live rather than prerecording one.

Audience members will be able to interact via a chat feature and make requests.

“The whole vibe is community-oriented.

“When you go to a concert, it’s a collaborative experience. There’s always a rapport between me and the audience. I didn’t want this to be a passive livestream.”

Brickman’s concerts have been one-man shows with guests.

“It’s meant to be simple,” he says.

For the Valentine’s Day concerts, Olivia Newton John will sing Brickman’s hit, “Valentine,” originally sung by Martina McBride.

Brickman, born and raised in Ohio, began his music training at age five. After attending the Cleveland Institute of Music, Brickman started his own business writing jingles for advertising. In 1995, he released his first album, “No Words.” He has sold eight million albums worldwide.

In addition to McBride, he has collaborated with other vocalists, including Carly Simon, Lady A, Michael W. Smith, Herb Alpert, Michael Bolton, Donny Osmond, Kenny Rogers, Johnny Mathis, Kenny Loggins and Jane Krakowski in country, R&B, Broadway, pop and jazz.

He’s in the 20th season of hosting the syndicated radio show, “The Jim Brickman Show.”

Brickman has had 21 No. 1 albums and 32 Top 20 radio singles. He’s been nominated for two Grammy Awards, and won gospel music’s Dove Award, two Songwriter of the Year Awards, and a Canadian Country Music Award.

In 2020, Brickman released his “25th Anniversary: Greatest Hits” album, on which he sang all of his own hits for the first time.

His music has been described as new age, but he says his songs are “unique to my own category,” with compositions that are mainly solo piano music with catchy melodies and nature sounds.

“They’re more like pop music but with no singing. What I do is unusual, but I love the eclectic nature of my music. I always felt there was a place for my type of music.”

His audiences are mutigenerational.

“There are a lot more young people than you would expect. Some learned my pieces in piano lesson and other are the children of fans who grew up with me.”

Different generations also discovered his music on the internet.

“Because of the splintering of genres, my career took on a new life.

“Relaxing music makes up some of the most popular digital channels, especially with the stress level of the world right now.”

For the Valentine’s Day weekend concerts, he promises all the hits and one or two new songs from his latest album.

He’s excited to be performing again.

“It’s an indescribable feeling of being on stage. You’re giving energy, romance, intimacy and escape. It becomes part of your life.”
