Catasauqua Area School District reports COVID-19 cases

Catasauqua Area School District Superintendent Robert Spengler reported new cases of COVID-19.

There was one positive student case at each of the district’s three schools - Sheckler Elementary School, Catasauqua Middle School and Catasauqua High School - according to a Jan. 21 notification. A Jan. 22 release reported an additional COVID-19 case at CHS.

A Jan. 24 notification reported four additional confirmed cases at CHS, with the current case count of six.

Due to these additional cases, CHS students were in virtual learning Jan. 26, with an expected return to in-person instruction Jan. 27. There was no student access to the CHS building during the closure.

“Thank you to everyone for your continued cooperation and flexibility in adjusting to these situations,” Spengler said in the Jan. 24 notice.

The other district schools had a virtual snow day Jan. 26 due to the icy winter weather.

“Please be aware that we will work directly with the Pennsylvania Department of Health and consider local school data when making decisions to alter the instructional mode,” Spengler said in the Jan. 21 notification. “To date, health and contact tracing does not indicate spread occurring within our school buildings.”

Spengler reported appropriate quarantines and isolations are in effect, in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Pennsylvania Department of Health guidelines. Any athletic- or student activity-related quarantines will be communicated via the director of student activities and/or head coaches.

The administration is closely monitoring the situation.

Spengler noted the district’s mitigation efforts have been successful. He shared his appreciation with everyone who contributed to the safe school environment.
