E. Allen board reorganizes, sets new session dates

East Allen Township Board of Supervisors held its reorganization meeting Jan. 4.

Supervisor Roger Unangst retained his role as board chairman. Supervisor Mark Schwartz was re-elected as vice chairman. Both were elected by a unanimous vote.

Brent Green was reappointed township manager. After the meeting, Green noted he was the youngest township supervisor elected in the state at age 18 in Lower Towamensing Township, Carbon County, in 2012.

“I am interested in government and really enjoy the experience,” he said.

Green currently serves as chairman of Lower Towamensing Township Board of Supervisors. He studied criminal justice at Kutztown University.

He expressed excitement about his role as East Allen’s manager.

“I love what I am doing in East Allen,” Green said.

Green also serves as a board member with Carbon County Township Officials Association.

Samantha Cordes, hired in 2020, was appointed township secretary. Rose Wedde, a seasoned public servant in East Allen, was reappointed as township treasurer.

Joseph Piperato III was reappointed township solicitor and was also reappointed solicitor of East Allen Township Planning Commission. Piperato expects a busy year in East Allen as several potential development projects will require solicitor services.

Hanover Engineering Associates was reappointed as the township engineers.

Numerous other commission and individual appointments were completed. Further information about these and the aforementioned appointments can be reviewed at the township website, eatwp.org.

In a matter of interest for residents who attend township board of supervisors meetings, the board flipped the workshop and monthly meetings. Green explained there were two main reasons for the switch of meeting dates.

The principal reason was that the fourth Thursday of the month typically falls on a holiday, such as Thanksgiving and around Christmas. Changes to accommodate the holidays have confused some residents wishing to attend the meeting. Therefore, the switch of the monthly meeting to the second Wednesday of the month was made.

The second reason for the switch is East Allen public hearings are held at the workshop meeting. An applicant must attend the planning commission meeting held the first Thursday of the month. Therefore, the township staff and consultants have less than one week to prepare for the hearing.

The supervisors changed the township supervisors meeting to the second Wednesday of the month, and the monthly workshop meeting will be the fourth Thursday of the month.

The next meeting of East Allen Township Board of Supervisors is 7 p.m. Jan. 28. It will be a virtual meeting. Visit eatwp.org for the call-in number and access codes.
