Borough construction projects updated

The bid for the Cotton Street Bridge work was approved during the Jan. 4 virtual Macungie Borough Council meeting. J. Phillips Excavating & Hauling LLC had the winning bid.

Macungie is seeking assistance for the repair of the Hickory Street bridge. The borough will continue seeking grants for the repairs.

In the Main Street Streetscape Phase 4, the bricklaying is near completion. There will be a walk-through with Councilman Barry Bloch. Councilman Todd Rutledge will also join the walk-through if he is available.

The lights for Lumber Street will be installed by Fromm Electric. This was approved by council with Rutledge abstaining due to a conflict of interest. The approved bid is $26,600. It was suggested outlets be added to the light poles.

A meeting will be scheduled with Lower Macungie, Macungie and the Stone Hill Meadows developer regarding stormwater management.

In other business, council accepted the resignation of Betty Silfies from the planning commission.

The Macungie Fire Department received an award for their part in the Heather Glenn Senior Living fire which occurred in September 2019.

Ordinance 2021-01 pertaining to the rental agreement, was approved unanimously.

Macungie Borough Council approved the appointment of Brenda Bower for the clerk/assistant treasurer position. She will begin Jan. 11 and will be paid $21 an hour. Kevin Weider was appointed to the vacancy board for one year. Chris Becker was appointed to the Water Authority for five years.

There was an executive session held to discuss financial and personnel issues.
