Cotton Street bridge eligible for emergency permit

During the virtual Macungie Borough Council meeting Nov. 2, bridge reconstruction was discussed. The Cotton Street bridge is now eligible for an emergency permit. This is a revision to when it was said an emergency permit was not allowable. This permit is for 120 days. The money to pay the repairs and reconstruction will be paid out of the rainy day fund. It was said it is best to get this repaired now so the situation does not get worse.

The Hickory Street bridge remains closed with $300,000 needed to pay for these repairs. The borough is waiting for possible Federal Emergency Management Agency funding. There is no work being done on the bridge due to the lack of financial resources.

The Lumber Street lights are ready to be installed. The lights are similar to Main Street.

Main Street Streetscapes Phase III is underway. Work is beginning on the sidewalk and preparation for the lights has begun.

Main Street Commons is proceeding with Embassy Bank almost ready to be opened. Plans for the car wash are being submitted to the planning commission.

Lower Macungie Township Library submitted a report to council about how they managed during the shutdown.

Kevin Wieder is requesting to remain on the vacancy board for a one-year term.

The towing ordinance was approved by council.

Mayor Ron Conrad reported the paper shredding and electronic recycling event went very well. There is a hazardous waste recycling event being provided by Lehigh County on Nov. 14 at Coca-Cola Park. Residents may call 610-782-3073 to register.

The rain garden has been completed with no plantings as per the original plan. Instead, seeds were spread in the straw which will add interest to the area.

The dumpster behind the dance studio was a topic of concern. A notice of violation was issued due to the location of the dumpster.

Unregistered rental units were discussed. Seventy units are left from the 211 originally reported. Further action is being taken until they are registered.

Ordinance 2020-03 for the police consortium agreement was approved.

The local share grant which are funds from gambling will be used for the Macungie Institute’s heating and cooling system.

Zoning Officer Joseph Peterson was approved as an additional building code official.

An executive session was held to discuss personnel issues.
