LHS golf wins subregional title

After his team recently defeated LaSalle for the District 1-11 subregional title, Liberty head golf coach Steve Bradley coined an appropriate nickname.

“They are now the Cane Clubbers” said the veteran coach. “They come out, get the job done, and really support each other.

“They beat a really good team, and they usually win the title. I think they fell apart.”

Liberty, which won the District 11 Class 3A title the previous week, was paced by senior Jordan Barker, who fired a 73. The Hurricanes advanced to the state tournament Monday at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York.

Fittingly, Bradley coined a nickname for his most consistent player all season.

“He is the John Wayne of high school golf,” noted Bradley. “He is always calm, cool, and collective. He double-bogeyed a hole, and he moved on. Northing seems to phase him.”

For the Barkers, cool on the course runs in their blood. Jimmy Barker, Jordan’s cousin, didn’t let an apparent collapse bother him.

“(Jimmy) five-putted the eighth hole,” said Bradley. “Then he came back. I told him afterward that he showed tremendous guts out there. He told me that he couldn’t let that bother him.

“It’s just another aspect of this team and how they can keep it all together.”

Following Jordan Barker were Matt Vital with a 77, Jimmy Barker (80), Michael Vital (81), Jase Barker (82), and Ryan Evans (83).

Jase Barker, a freshman, won’t soon forget his experience with his older brother Jordan.

“Playing with my brother at regionals was something that we talked about for a really long time,” said the younger Barker. “The playing conditions were perfect, and we were all really excited. Jordan is a great player, and his round of 73 helped our team very much.

“We knew we would have our hands full with LaSalle, but coach Bradley made sure we knew we could do it. My round wasn’t nearly as good as districts. But it was a team event, and I knew every shot counted.”
