Edmund J. Tunitis

Edmund J. Tunitis, 92, of Lower Macungie Township, died Sept. 19, 2020. He was the husband of the late Joan (McCormick) Tunitis. Born in Philadelphia, he was a son of the late Gus Tunitis and Jeannette Elizabeth (King) Tunitis.

He attended grade school at St. Bonaventure and St. Stephens schools in Philadelphia and graduated from St. Vincent Preparatory School in Latrobe.

In August of 1946 he enlisted in the Army as a private and was sent to Fort Knox, Ky., for basic armored infantry training school for two months. He was then assigned to Chin Hae, Korea, where he served as a company clerk with Headquarters Battery, 6th Field Artillery Division (155mm Howitzer), November 1946 to June 1947. During his time in Chin Hae, he primarily performed guard duties. In June 1947 he was transferred to Ascom City in Korea where he was assigned to the 503rd Engineer Battalion, 24th Army Corps, as a Supply NCO until June 1948. For his service in Korea, he was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Korean Appreciation Medal. After his discharge, he returned to live in Philadelphia while he attended the Pennsylvania Military College at Chester and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in economics.

He moved to Drexel Hill where he lived until 1968. He worked for Commercial Credit Corporation in Chester from 1952 until 1954 and Philadelphia National Bank from 1954 to 1977. He attended the Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers in 1966. In 1968, he moved to Broomall until 1977, when he moved to Coopersburg to work for Union Bank & Trust in Bethlehem, until retiring in 1982. In the same year he moved to Lower Macungie Township and in 1984 to Emmaus.

In his earlier years, his hobby was aerobatic flying.

He is survived by children, Joseph, Susan Liberi, Joan Brofft, Jeannette Berean, John and Thomas; 15 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Services are private. Arrangements were made by the Bachman, Kulik & Reinsmith Funeral Homes, Emmaus.
