CASD approves 2020-21 athletic plan

Catasauqua Area School District Board of Education met for a special board meeting June 23. The board approved the 2020-21 Return to Sport COVID-19 Health and Safety Plan.

According to Thomas Moll, director of student activities, every student will need to get tested and have their temperatures taken by the athletic trainers and coaches.

Chris Leavy, athletic trainer with Lehigh Valley Health Network, provided coaches with an overview of what the teams are allowed to do in each phase of the four-phase plan.

The athletic season start was pushed back an additional few weeks following state guidance.

In other business, board members approved new teachers at Catasauqua Middle School. Brett Sonntag was approved as an eighth-grade science and social studies teacher, Jordyn Gutai was approved as an eighth-grade math and science teacher and Tarik Haddad was approved as a seventh-grade social studies and science teacher.

The school board also approved the appointment of mentor teachers for the 2020-21 school year. Anthony Brinkley will be mentored by Christine Snyder in third grade, Joseph Rivera will be mentored by James Wilson in fourth grade, Haddad will be mentored by Lisa Roth, Gutai will be mentored by Kyle Rusnock and Sonntag will be mentored by Janine Hemond.

Tamara Miller was approved as a substitute custodian.

During the July 20 school board meeting, more personnel changes were approved.

Board members approved Colleen Mashett as a math and ELA teacher in the seventh grade at CMS. Mashett will be mentored by Jen Greig.

The board also approved the resignations of Spencer Koppenol from his position as a music teacher at CMS and Judie Pocze, a districtwide substitute bus driver, as well as the resignations of Ann Hess, Catasauqua High School kitchen manager, and Jose Rivera, districtwide custodian.
