Taking a tour

The 2020 Independence Day celebration at George Taylor House, Lehigh and Poplar streets, Catasauqua, was an abbreviated version of the annual event.

Volunteers at the GTH gave spirited house tours to the guests who stopped by.

Usually the celebration of the Fourth of July includes a reading of the Declaration of Independence. This was not on the agenda for the celebration this year.

About mid-June, the borough gave approval to open the historical landmark once the county moved to green status. Since the green phase started June 26, it did not give much time to plan and organize the reading.

The GTH recently got a new slate roof, protected with copper flashing. Volunteers are taking note of other areas of the house in need of repair.

Volunteers have replaced much of the furniture that was donated by Lehigh County with refurbished period pieces. It was noted the upstairs sleeping rooms are reminiscent of the colonial era.

Nora and Annie Sommerfield enjoy a tour July 4 of the George Taylor House, Lehigh and Poplar streets, Catasauqua, during an open house event.
