STUDENT PROFILE - Rana Akyildiz, Lehigh Valley Academy - Coordinated by Julie Swan
Grade: Graduated
Family members: My parents and my two younger siblings
Favorite subject: Psychology and biology. I find psychology to be extremely interesting because of explanations behind certain human behaviours and why we interact the way we do. I love biology because I love learning more about the human body and looking at things on a molecular level.
Activities: I am involved in many activities both in and out of school. My favorites are being the chair of our mini-THON, where we are raising money for pediatric cancer research. I also love being the president of our National Honor Society where I have introduced a project to fundraise money to build a water well in an underserved part of the world that does not have easy access to clean water.
Next steps: I am planning on earning my undergraduate degree in neuroscience or microbiology. After that I am planning on attending medical school to earn my medical degree.
Career goals: To become a cardiovascular surgeon
Heroes: My parents are my heroes because of their sacrifices to get me to where I am currently.
Hobbies: Some of my hobbies are reading, hanging out with and cooking with my friends.
Current job(s): Occasionally babysitting
Volunteer/community work: I have volunteered over 150 hours at St. Luke’s University Hospital, as well as fundraised over $2,000 to build a water well in Cameroon, Africa.
Likes: Sunsets, animals and snow days
Dislikes: Loud chewing
Greatest accomplishment (so far): I like to think my greatest accomplishment is the amount of time I have dedicated to help others outside of my community. Being able to take the resources I have and spread them to different parts of the world is pretty incredible.
Advice for peers: Try to have fun while staying on top of your work; while high school can sometimes feel like a chore it goes by so fast.
