East Allen Township supervisors move to in-person meetings
At its regular meeting June 25, East Allen Township Board of Supervisors moved to an in-person meeting. It was a welcomed change for most of the supervisors and residents. Only Supervisor Donald Heiney objected to the format.
The agenda was limited as the township began to return to normal operations.
Supervisors approved a variance to permit a septic system on Penny Lane to be less than the prescribed distance from the water source and the neighboring system. The replacement for the existing system is more efficient and up-to-date than the current system. The neighboring property had no problem with the replacement plan.
Township Engineer James Milot asked the neighboring owner to install a ultraviolet light decontamination system.
There was some discussion on the long-term viability of maintaining a UV system, but the neighboring property owner was amenable to installing and maintaining the system. The UV requirement will be made a part of the public record and will be included in any future property transfers.
Chuck Frantz, recreation program director, introduced some of the counselors staffing the township’s summer camp, which began June 29.
East Allen is the only township in the area offering a day camp. The program was endorsed by Chairman Roger Unangst.
“The camp allows the residents of the township to start living their lives again without government interference,” he said.
Heiney was opposed to opening the camp, citing safety reasons and suggesting the township wait until there is further information available on the COVID-19 virus.
Township Manager Brent Green introduced Doreen Curtin, the township’s new zoning officer. She is working closely with the township manager to make procedural changes to zoning requests. She has been talking with residents while touring the neighborhoods.
Supervisors addressed speeding on Shady Lane, based on numerous neighborhood complaints. The speed limit will be set and posted at 25 mph.
The action was approved and signage requested. Green expects signs to be posted in July. Other neighborhoods will be reviewed to determine if speed limit signs are needed.
