Youth House names new board members

Valley Youth House held a virtual annual meeting May 21. Guest speaker Jon Rubin, Deputy Secretary from the Pa Department of Human Services, Office of Children, Youth, and Families, spoke about the “Future Trends in Child Welfare in the Commonwealth of PA”.

The VYH nominating committee proposed, voted on and approved the 2020-21 slate of board members. The new members of the board of directors are Terri Eline, Director, Marketing and Engagement, First Generation Company; Kelly Fratamico, Esq., MSW, Child Welfare, Family, and Poverty Law; Victor Martinez, president and CEO, LaMega radio; Mike Molewski, ChFC®, CFP®, Principal, Financial Advisor, CAPTRUST and Alma Scott-Buczak, SPHR, Associate Vice President, Human Resources, Lafayette College.

Elected to the board of governors, Southeast Pennsylvania region, are William J. DeVito, SVP/State Director of Public Affairs, Citizens Bank; Morgan Dumont, manager of marketing and sales operations, Exude, Inc.; Rev. Herbert Lusk, III, Minister, Greater Exodus Baptist Church; Dr. Erica S. A. Patterson, DM, director of contracts management and supplier diversity in the Supply Chain Department, Philadelphia Gas Works and Michael Stackow, Counsel, Cozen O’Connor.

SVHS’s Koehler wins PAC competition

Glenn Koehler of Bethlehem won Pocono Arts Council’s The Earth Speaks VI: A Juried Exhibition on the Environmental Crisis photography award. The photo, part of the series ”Biloxi, Two Years After Katrina”, depicts a barren landscape and a wind and storm surge-battered McDonald’s sign just off the coast in Biloxi, Miss.

The then senior at Saucon Valley High School senior was part of a search and rescue team following the storm. He was part of a ground crew going house-to-house in Waveland, Miss., ‘ground zero’ of the hurricane.

Kirshenbaum receives Lehigh award

Jeffrey Kirshenbaum, of Bethlehem, received Lehigh University’s James J. Duane III Student Life Leadership Award Spring 2020. The award is given to seniors in recognition of extraordinary performance as a student leader at Lehigh University. The basis for evaluating outstanding performance includes overall impact on Lehigh students, program development, and implementation, bridging cultural differences, and student governance by taking a role to improve student, faculty and staff interactions.

LCCC inducts five from Bethlehem

Bethlehem area residents Naairah Cherry, Rose Reyes, Ashley Sabol and Kate Taylor were recently inducted into Alpha Omicron Alpha, LCCC’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter, the national honor society for two-year colleges.

Herman inducted by Mu Kappa Tau

Jarod Herman, of Bethlehem, was inducted into Mu Kappa Tau at the University of Scranton. He is a junior marketing and business administration major. The national honor society for marketing recognizes scholarship and high academic accomplishment among marketing students.

Alpha Sigma Nu inducts McGivern

Graduate student Alexandra McGivern, of Bethlehem, was inducted into Alpha Sigma Nu, the national Jesuit Honor Society at the University of Scranton. Alpha Sigma Nu is the only honor society open to students and faculty in all disciplines of the university.

Wisser named senior prize winner

Stephen Wisser, 20, of Bethlehem, was named the outstanding senior concentrator and the recipient of the senior prize in Neuroscience at Hamilton College’s annual Class and Charter Day held virtually on May 11. The event combines the traditional class day celebration and the commemoration of the granting of college’s charter on May 26, 1812.

Iacovone inducted to LPI

Jacob Iacovone of Bethlehem was one of 24 students named to the Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania Xi Omega chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, the National Communication Honor Society, for 2019-20.

To be eligible for induction into the honor society, communication studies majors and minors must have completed 60 semester credit-hours, have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0, complete the equivalent of 12 semester credit-hours in communication studies, have a minimum GPA of 3.25 for all communication studies courses and currently be enrolled as a student in good standing.

Local students honored by KU history department

The Kutztown University Department of History has named award and scholarship winners and new initiates of Phi Alpha Theta National History Honor Society, including Genaro Robles of Bethlehem.

Those receiving awards and scholarships are: Exceptional Seniors: Shannon Shafnisky, Emily Murray, Emily Quigg, Isabelle Waddelow and Shiyi Ding; Martin Luther King Jr. History Club Award: Mitchell Oller; Bright and Lucille Beck Award in American History: Isabelle Waddelow; Anthony J. Mazzaferri Award: Jenna Sagan; Willits Scholarship: Sophie Hinkle; and the Victor Story Scholarship: Heily Montes.

The department sponsors the Mu Xi Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the National Honor Society in History. The society initiates are Nathan Burleigh, Lucinda Damm, Caroline Fogarty, John Lukan, Nicholas Mancaruso, Matthew Miller, Erik Modig, Hannah Phillips, Genaro Robles Jr., Jenna Sagan, Madison Schuenemann, Kayla Sloan, Matthew Sutton, Julivette Torres and Madison Wickersham.

Singh inducted to honor society

Prasoon Singh, of the Bethlehem area, was recently inducted into the Kutztown University chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda. The honor society is the oldest and largest national honor society for non-traditional adult students who achieve and maintain outstanding scholastic standards and leadership characteristics in higher education. Inductees into the chapter must have a minimum of a 3.2 GPA and successfully completed at least 24 credits at Kutztown University.

Warnke named to MAC team

Katelyn Warnke, of Bethlehem, was named to the Lebanon Valley College Middle Atlantic Conference’s Spring Sportsmanship Team. The Saucon Valley HS graduate is a member of the women’s outdoor track and field team.

One student-athlete in each sport was nominated by their coach for inclusion on the team, which recognizes student-athletes who exemplify great character and demonstrate the act of sportsmanship both on and off the field of play. They represent their team, institution, and the conference with high integrity, and exhibit respect for themselves, teammates, coaches, and opponents.

Local resients honored at convocation

Patrick Kantner, of Bethlehem, received the Noel R. and Edith J. Moyer Award in Philosophy. The award is given to a senior philosophy major who has achieved outstanding scholastic records, loves wisdom, has developed the powers of critical thinking and has fostered the spirit of philosophical inquiry.

The Muhlenberg College Honors Convocation is a formal academic ceremony designed to honor and celebrate leadership and scholarly excellence and achievement.

Engler appointed new regional manager

The Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Northeastern Pennsylvania appointed Douglas Engler as the Lehigh Valley regional manager. He will succeed Robert S. Thomson III, who retired June 30. He will be the lead point person in delivering services and in supporting its mission in the Greater Lehigh Valley regions.

He was a corporate technical manager at Reeb Millwork Corporation and an engineering and quality manager at Lehigh Valley Plastics Inc., both in Bethlehem; program manager at Mancor PA Inc., Allentown; and a director of production at Brenner Aerostructures, Bensalem. He was an aerospace engineering consultant for 15 years.

He earned a master’s degree in business administration from Athabasca University, Alberta, Canada; and an Aviation Manufacturing Engineering Technology degree from Confederation College, Ontario, Canada.

Kauffman chooses Albright College

Diana Kauffman, of Bethlehem, has committed to attend Albright College beginning in fall 2020. A graduate of Freedom HS, she plans to study child and family studies and psychology.

Krause to attend Clarkson University

Kam Krause, of Bethlehem, will attend Clarkson University in Potsdam, N.Y., as a member of the Class of 2024 and majoring in electrical engineering in the fall.
