The howitzer artillery gun, which stood in front of Northampton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4714, has been removed from the Post’s former headquarters at Main Street and Laubach Avenue
The World War II howitzer will be permanently placed at the veterans plaza on Washington Avenue. For the time-being, however, it has been placed in a secure, fenced area at the borough’s sewer plant.
Borough Manager LeRoy Brobst indicated the area at the veterans plaza will be landscaped before the move, which could take place in time for a Nov. 11 Veterans Day program.
The work schedule by the public works department in repairing and repaving streets is now fully underway, thus delaying the howitzer move.
The new VFW site is at the Col. John Siegfried homestead, 21st and Canal streets. Opportunity Behavioral Health, which purchased the Siegfried homestead in 2019, has offered space in the building for the VFW to store equipment and hold meetings.
