Council will resume in-person sessions
Northampton Borough Council will resume its public meetings June 18 in council chambers at the municipal building, 2014 Laubach Ave. This is the first time it is holding meetings in its chambers since early March when the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions caused a lockdown of the municipal building.
However, borough Manager LeRoy Brobst said only 25 people will be allowed in council chambers for the meeting. He said that count includes 13 borough officials - eight council members, borough manager, secretary, solicitor, mayor and police chief. Reporters and the public will make up the balance. Social distancing guidelines will be in place.
Northampton Banquet and Event Center has canceled numerous events at its facility, 1601 Laubach Ave. Northampton County remains in the yellow phase of the state’s reopening, and it is not known yet when banquets can resume. There is a wedding, with more than 300 people invited, scheduled for August, and state guidelines will decide if that may take place.
The facility’s well-attended Monday evening bingo events also may not yet resume.
Other events held at Northampton Banquet and Event Center, such as the monthly meetings of Northampton Exchange Club, are also awaiting notice about restarting. The organization’s fall craft show is one of the events awaiting a decision on whether it can be held.
The coronavirus pandemic has also taken its toll on the public’s use of pavilions at Municipal Park and Canal Street Park.
Brobst reported numerous picnics, family gatherings and graduation events scheduled there have had to be canceled. The borough is not taking reservations for the use of the pavilions until it receives word from the state that it can do so.
The shutdown has had an effect on youth softball and baseball programs of Northampton Athletic Association, which has yet to announce whether it can hold a summer program for the youth. A decision is expected to be made shortly.
The Jack Frost parade, organized by the Exchange Club, traditionally takes place in October. The club will decide in the next few months if it will be held this year. Such a decision will be based on whether musical organizations, such as Northampton Area High School’s band, can participate.
