Board has brief agenda

Upper Macungie supervisors had a short business agenda to address during their June 4 board meeting.

The meeting was both live streamed and in-person, but with limited seating in accordance with social distancing guidelines.

Chairman James Brunell and board member Kathy Rader were in physical attendance. Vice chairman Sean Gill attended virtually.

To begin, supervisors approved a temporary pay increase to $31.80 per hour for Interim Director of the Bureau of Fire Peter Christ.

One ordinance restricting truck traffic on Russett Road between Blue Barn Road and Chapmans Road - which was discussed at the township’s May meeting and prepared by Solicitor Andrew Schantz - was approved by supervisors.

Director of Public Works Scott Faust told the board emergency pipe repair was required on Schantz Road, which is facing increased truck traffic due to construction on Route 100, and the repair work was awarded to National Gunite for an amount not to exceed $38,500.

Supervisors also approved a second motion to approve a township mailbox repair/replacement policy, which Faust explained would have Upper Macungie repair or replace a damaged mailbox if directly struck by township equipment, such as a snowplow, at the owner’s request, or put $75 toward a replacement.

Under the Parks and Recreation Board report, member Bret Spangler noted the board had its first meeting since February last month both virtually and in-person, and said for the upcoming June 18 meeting there will be discussions about possibly moving forward with some activities or programs which comply with social distancing guidelines and other COVID-19 safety precautions.

For the Community Development Report, the board noted there will be a planning commission workshop June 15 and the regular meeting June 17, both at 7 p.m., in addition to a zoning hearing board meeting 6:30 p.m. June 24.

For the police report, Interim Police Chief Michael Sitoski reported police had 701 total calls for service. The most reported crimes were disturbing the peace at 15, drug/alcohol violations at six and assaults, DUI offenses and fraud crimes at five each.

The K-9 unit reported four outings for tracking, narcotics and one stop assist, in addition to one public demonstration and one assist for other jurisdiction.

Six total inspections were carried out through the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program, with eight violations discovered and two citations issued.

Christ reported there were 51 fire inspections in May. Cetronia EMS had 203 total responses with no mutual aid assists.

Emergency responses by Fogelsville Station 8 were 27, Trexlertown Station 25 at 31 and Upper Macungie Station 56 at 32.

Station 56 also saw the addition of two new members.

The next meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on July 9.
