County agency to distribute food June 11 at recreation center

Northampton Borough Manager LeRoy Brobst informed borough council, during its June 4 teleconferenced meeting, food will be available at no cost 1:30-2:30 p.m. June 11 in the parking lot of Northampton Recreation Center, 1 Lerchenmiller Drive.

Brobst reported Northampton County Department of Community and Economic Development, led by coordinator Tina Smith, will have a refrigerated truck packed with food for distribution to the public, free of charge.

Brobst said there are no restrictions on who can obtain the food. No reservations or identification is needed. People just need to show up, Brobst said.

Northampton Area Food Bank currently provides more than 500 people with food.

In addition, residents can find fresh produce and other items at Northampton Farmers Market, which is open 3-6:30 p.m. Tuesdays at Municipal Park, Laubach Avenue and Smith Lane, through mid-September.

In other news, Brobst said, “We have not had one complaint,” regarding the lockdown at the Northampton Borough Municipal Building since mid-March. He said borough residents have been served very well via email or telephone correspondence regarding requests and concerns. The borough municipal office should be opening soon, it was mentioned.

The recreation center, also closed since mid-March because of COVID-19, will reopen July 1. Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf’s guidelines will be enforced, such as social distancing and other measures.
