Officers aid in providing bike for North Catasauqua resident

As summer rolls in, kids in Catasauqua and North Catasauqua boroughs are taking advantage of the nice weather and getting some much-needed outdoor recreation. One young resident, Joniel Nieves, wanted to join in on the fun, so his mother, Roseaida, looked online to find him a used bike.

They found another resident who was selling an old bike online, but soon after Joniel started riding it, the bike fell to pieces and stopped working. His mother reported the fraudulent sale to North Catasauqua Police Department.

Cpl. Antonio Tramonte decided he needed to do something to help. Joniel is on the autism spectrum, and Tramonte - who has a child on the spectrum himself - could not stand to see him taken advantage of in this way.

Being unable to get a refund for the bike, Tramonte decided he and the police department would take it upon themselves to get Joniel a new bicycle.

Tramonte reached out to one of the nearby Target stores and asked if it had any bikes in stock that could be donated. As soon as the store had one available, Target called the department and offered a silver and blue Huffy mountain bike, along with a helmet, for the officers to give to Joniel as a surprise.

They did just that May 29, inviting Joniel and his family to borough hall to reveal the special gift.

Joniel was shocked and overjoyed to have a brand-new bicycle. Eager to try it out, he donned his helmet and took a spin around the block soon after taking a few photos with Tramonte and the other officers and thanking them for the thoughtful gift.
