American Legion meets mask demand

After the surge of people at the April 19 mask giveaway, the volunteers at American Legion Post 215, 330 Second St., Catasauqua, showed up with 600 masks for the April 26 mask giveaway event.

The crowds were not as large, influenced by the cold, rainy weather. But the Legion still gave away 450 more masks.

“I think we have pretty well satisfied the need for those that were not able to get masks,” said Michelle Loughran who, along with her parents, was part of the crew that made masks.

At this giveaway, the Legion had children’s masks, which were a hit. The remaining masks will be donated to local seniors.

Loughran, who is a first responder nurse, wanted to give a shout out to Joann Fabrics.

“They give away a yard of material to make masks. They have mask kits, too. But you need to get there when they start because everything goes fast,” she said.

The Legion will resume its normal activities as soon as possible.

There is discussion on resuming breakfast with a take-out option. If the take-out option is appealing, let someone at the Legion know.

The breakfasts may be extended into the summer because travel might be restricted. Everything is open for discussion.

The ham raffle is delayed, but Legion members are still planning on holding the event. Dorothy Vassa’s casino trips are also delayed. She is looking for a tentative start-up date.

Ideas for events to help support the Legion are encouraged.
