Northampton Borough Council meets 7:30 p.m. May 7 for its second teleconference, due to state guidelines in place during the coronavirus pandemic. The agenda includes a possible vote on whether the Northampton Borough Municipal Pool will open this summer.
Borough Manager LeRoy Brobst said in the event council votes to open the pool, located at 1599 Laubach Ave., it will take place on the first weekend in June. The pool usually closes the third week of August to allow its employed college students to return to their campuses and for high school students to get ready for their classes.
The borough has a sufficient number of applicants seeking jobs at the pool, such as lifeguards, concession stand workers and front desk assistants. Brobst said the lifeguards are certified by the American Red Cross and have passed lifesaving and training courses.
The pool complex this season may see the building of a pavilion. Funds for the structure were obtained from a Northampton County grant.
The pool first opened in 1947 and, over the years, has been maintained by the borough without missing a season of use.
Because of the pandemic, Catasauqua Borough and other municipal pools might not open for the summer of 2020. The Northampton Borough Council decision is expected to result in a lengthy debate on the pros and cons of the issue.
Council, in another matter on the meeting agenda, may discuss the issue of hiring summer help for grass cutting, chores and other minor duties. Again, because of the coronavirus, some communities have decided not to employ part-time summer help.
