’Canes want to defend title

Liberty’s baseball team is coming of a banner 2019 campaign that saw them bring home the District 11 championship.

What could be in store for the Hurricanes this spring is anyone’s guess if they’ll even play, but with 13 seniors gone to graduation, it’s fair to say that head coach Andy Pitsilos would have some holes to fill.

“We’ll have pitching depth but we’ll be inexperienced with 13 players lost to graduation,” said Pitsilos. “The key to success will be to grow as a team and play fundamental defense behind our pitching, while manufacturing runs and being disciplined at the plate.”

Back for the Hurricanes 23-4 season a year ago are: Sr. Steve Super, P/1B; Sr. Lukas Azzati, P; Sr. Matt Klipple, OF/P; Sr. Ryan Pysher, C/3B, Sr. Andrew Walker, P; Jr Jack Rothenhausler P/3B and Jr. Brayden D’Amico, SS.

Newcomers are Jr. Blake George, 2B; Jr. Devin Fletcher, P; Jr. Sam Raineri, 1B; Jr. Wyatt Marshall, CF; Jr. Parker Frey, OF/P; Jr. Brandyn D’Amico, OF; Jr. Eric Ludwick, C/OF; Jr. Brandon Holzinger, P; Jr. Nick Lees, P/IF and Jr. Ryan Evans, 3B.

As with every year, Pitsilos doesn’t look to rebuild, but rather reload his crop for another postseason run.

“As in any year it is important to be better at the end of the year than when we start,” Pitsilos said. “Our goals don’t change as a team. We want to win our division, then the league then districts and compete in the state playoffs. With hard work and a little luck, we could contend this year.”
