Becahi’s Grasso set to retire
Mike Grasso has always been a mainstay at Bethlehem Catholic, but after 46 years of coaching, Grasso has finally decided to retire.
The long time baseball coach is hoping that he gets one final ride this spring in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, but also understands that there are bigger things at work than sports.
“Everything is in God’s hands now,” said Grasso. “I’m praying everyday that we can find a cure for this virus and that it can heal people. I consider myself one of the richest men in the world because of the life I’ve lived and all the support I’ve gotten. I’ve been truly blessed and that won’t change my feelings if we don’t get to play this season.”
The Hawks went 9-11 last season and lost to Wilson in the District 11 4A quarterfinals and were bringing back a team that Grasso felt highly confident in.
Returning players include Matt Caricari (Sr. P-IF), David Ciaccio (Sr. P-IF), Mike Luchetta (Sr. P-OF), Chris Morrow (Sr. IF), John O’Connor (Sr. OF-P) and Matt Martinez (Jr. C).
“I thought we have an outstanding group of seniors this season,” said Grasso. “This was going to be one of our best pitching staffs in awhile and I thought we would have a very strong team.”
While everyone in the spring sports season has hit the pause button, Grasso is taking it all in stride, as he holds out hope that a season can be salvaged.
“I’m hoping that we can get things going in May, but I really don’t know,” he said. “I have 11 grandchildren and want to spend more time with my wife and family. I’m looking forward to it and as great as it would be to play this season, I’m more concerned that we can fight this virus.”
