ALBURTIS BOROUGH COUNCIL

Alburtis residents Gary and Julie DeRoner attended the Feb. 24 Alburtis Borough Council meeting to express concerns for damage done to their home.

Gary DeRoner said on Jan. 17 a contractor repairing sewer lines pulled an electrical line off of their house, leaving a hole in the side. The DeRoners were upset after they failed to receive notification from the contractor of the hole when their neighbor instead told them.

While Gary DeRoner claims borough engineer Jeff Ott said another contractor would repair their home, he explained he has yet to hear from Ott regarding the current status of the situation. The only repairs the home received so far was a plastic bag to prevent any rain from leaking in.

It was said other homes were also damaged.

Council worked to help the DeRoners find a solution to aid their communication issues.

“We can’t fix what happened in the past, but we can address what is happening today and make sure everything is corrected,” council member Vanessa Taggart said.

Council member John Aleszczyk advised the DeRoners to file an insurance claim in hopes their insurance company will contact the contractor’s insurance company to resolve the issue.

Alburtis representative Theresa Schweyer from the Lower Macungie Library Board of Trustees also attended the meeting to inform council of services they offer and new renovations in hopes of attracting more visitors and securing more funding.

Schweyer said in addition to these new renovations, the Lower Macungie Library is a member of the Lehigh Carbon Library Cooperative. This allows 11 Lehigh and Carbon county libraries to share materials in each library and deliver books within one to two days, as opposed to simply visiting another library.

Borough manager Sharon Trexler shared with council she sent a letter to all residents and landlords encouraging them to pick up any and all trash in response to unsecured garbage.

The borough also received a letter from Lower Macungie Township explaining the fire police will no longer serve private functions.

In other meeting news, it was announced Maintenance Supervisor Donnie Derr successfully earned his water license from the Department of Environmental Protection. In return, he will receive a $1,000 bonus.
