NASD watching closely
There are no known cases of COVID-19 (coronavirus) in Northampton Area School District, as of press time March 11.
However, in an abundance of caution, NASD Superintendent of Schools Joseph S. Kovalchik sent a letter Feb. 26 concerning COVID-19 to parents and guardians.
Principals also made announcements to students about the virus via district buildings’ video broadcasts.
District officials are taking the following additional precautions: using a fogging machine, which contains hospital-grade disinfectant, and performing extra wipe-downs in classrooms and offices.
In the letter, Kovalchik said the following measures are being discussed with students to prevent the spread of viruses:
• Wash hands with soap and water.
• Avoid close contact with others who are sick.
• Avoid sharing personal items, such as drinks, foods and eating utensils.
• Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth.
The letter stated, “In addition to COVID-19, the district is also concerned about the spread of influenza in district buildings. Currently, attendance is at the normal rates in all of our buildings, and we have no known cases of COVID-19. With that being said, we will continue to monitor our attendance and follow our regular cleaning procedures.”
The letter noted specific concerns regarding a child’s health should be addressed with the family’s doctor.
