Orefield Middle School Theater students will present their version of the Broadway musical “Guys and Dolls” March 5 through 7.

This two-act musical set in 1920s New York City and Havana, Cuba, tells the overlapping story of gambler Nathan Detroit, who is engaged to Miss Adelaide, the headliner at the Hot Box Club and high-roller Sky Masterson, who falls in love with mission worker Sarah Brown.

The performance opens with Detroit, played by Andrew Saches searching for the next location for his illegal “floating” craps game.

Saches said he likes using a New York accent in the show.

“I like that I get to spend time with my friends and the songs in the show are really catchy,” he stated.

Ellie Ott plays Miss Adelaide, lead performer at the Hot Box Club, a tacky cabaret joint.

“My character Adelaide is a Hot Box dancer, who has been engaged to Detroit for 14 years,” Ott said.

Ott said Adelaide wants to be married to Detroit so much that she has developed a constant cold.

“Adelaide is a humorous and bubbly character, so in playing her I get to play around and make jokes to the audience,” Ott added.

Ott said she likes the music, characters and accents in the show.

Eric Wood commented on his role as the suave and intelligent gangster Sky Masterson.

“Sky is a hotshot gambler, well known for making large bets,” Wood said.

Wood said his character Sky starts out in the show as a hot shot but by the end of the show he is a new person.

“The thing I enjoy most about playing Sky I would have to say is being able to move around the stage,” Wood stated.

Isabelle Pruzinsky also commented on her role as the conventional, respectable and principal Sarah Brown.

“My character Sarah Brown is very holy and conserved. She changes throughout the whole show,” Pruzinsky stated.

Pruzinsky said she enjoys the music, characters and being in the show because it is so much fun.

The musical is directed and choreographed by Lori Colacito with help from Kate Pistone, assistant director, and Erich Joella, music director.

“’Guys and Dolls’ is a classical musical by Frank Loesser about the life of gamblers in New York City,” Colacito said. “The music is fun and upbeat, and the characters are vibrant.”

Pistone said this is a great introduction to musical theater and it is a great teaching tool as well as a fun show. The show will be presented 7 p.m. March 5, 6 and 7; and 2 p.m. March 7 in the Orefield Middle School auditorium, 2675 Route 309, Orefield.

Tickets are $7 and will be available one hour before each performance at the door.

Doors open 30 minutes before each performance.
