LHS sends two to Hershey
Javien DeLeon isn’t one to say much, but he has let his wrestling speak for itself over the past two weeks.
The Liberty sophomore is one of two Hurricanes that advanced to the PIAA championships this week at Hershey’s Giant Center, as senior Jason Rezac will also be on his way to Hershey after both wrestlers finished in fourth place at the Northeast Regional 3A tournament last weekend at Memorial Gymnasium.
DeLeon (113) lost to Nazareth’s Andreo Ferraina 4-3 in the consolation round Saturday night, while Rezac fell to Nazareth’s Jake Dressler 7-2 in the consolation round.
After bringing six wrestlers to regionals, head coach Brandon Hall was hoping to get a bigger number out to Hershey, but is still pleased with his contingent despite the heartache of seeing some of his wrestlers miss out on the opportunity.
“We asked ourselves coming in that we brought six guys to regionals and we wanted to get as many as possible out there, but not having Kevin Hennessy make it is bittersweet for everyone,” said Hall. “We all wanted him to make it out there because of how much work he puts in and how much his family supports the program. It’s a tough pill to swallow.”
Hennessy lost to Hazleton’s Jake Marnell 2-1 in the consolation semifinals to end his bid at a shot for Hershey. Marnell scored the winning takedown with 48 seconds left in the third period and was able to ride him out to secure his berth in the top four moving on to states.
While Hennessy’s omission from Hershey his senior year was a blow to the program, DeLeon and Rezac are hoping to carry the torch for LHS when wrestling opens up on Thursday afternoon.
“It feels great,” said DeLeon of making it to Hershey. “It’s nice to go to states and have another week to wrestle. My whole goal was to get to Hershey.”
DeLeon (34-7) will have an uphill battle in Hershey, as he opens with Ethan Berginc (32-6) of Hempfield, but will then have to face one of the top wrestlers in the bracket with Cumberland Valley’s Ben Monn (38-2) awaiting the winner.
“I’ve wrestled some of the top guys in my weight class here, so I feel like I have a good shot at placing,” said DeLeon. “I feel like I’m prepared for whatever I see in Hershey. “
Rezac (38-6) is in the exact same position in his weight class, as he starts off with Antonio Amelio (34-15) of Seneca Valley in his opener and then would have to face Northwest champ Paniro Johnson (36-2), one of the top seeds in the bracket, in the next round.
“We’re from District 11 and our guys are going out there with the mindset of coming home with hardware,” said Hall. “You never know what can happen out at Hershey. I’m extremely excited for both of our guys. We told Deleon right after Thanksgiving that he’s a district finalist and a state medalist. I don’t think he believed that, but I’m glad he’s going to experience this. Rezac has been working so hard for this too and I’m really happy for both of those guys.”
