Hawks crown 3 regional champs
Cole Handlovic was determined to not have the same feeling two weeks in a row. After losing to Northampton’s Jagger Condomitti in the District 11 finals, the duo met again in last week’s Northeast Regional championship and Handlovic got his revenge.
The Bethlehem Catholic senior scored an escape and takedown in the final 21 seconds of the third period to secure an 8-4 win over his K-Kid counterpart.
His triumph was one of three gold medals by the Hawks on the evening, as Becahi finished in second-place in the team standings with 203.5 points behind team champion Nazareth (221.5 points).
For Handlovic, it was a chance at redemption after falling short at districts.
“Obviously, losing in districts upset me,” said Handlovic. “I wasn’t really training for him or one wrestler in particular coming into regionals, but I knew I had to be more aggressive on offense.”
Handlovic and Condomitti might be on a collision course for a third matchup in as many weeks, as they are on opposite sides of the bracket in Hershey.
As two of the top wrestlers in the state at the weight class, Handlovic (41-5) and Condomitti (35-3) should be on track to wrestle for another gold, which is exactly what Handlovic expects.
“My goal has always been to win gold in Hershey,” Handlovic said. “States is always wild, but I think Jagger is definitely the second best kid. You never know what’s going to happen out there, but I believe we have a good shot at seeing each other again.”
The youngest Hawk from the weekend was also the only repeat champion from districts, as freshman Tyler Kasak (106) had no problem winning his bracket, posting a 10-0 major decision over Sean Logue of Father Judge in the finals.
Kasak dominated the weight class, posting three falls en route to his championship victory. Still, he wanted more.
“I just thought my mindset was a little different at regionals because I wanted to go out there and just whip everyone,” Kasak said. “I didn’t know they gave out awards for fastest pin and stuff, so my goal for this weekend was to get out there and get as many pins as possible.”
Kasak (16-0) now has to be looked upon as a major contender to come away with a gold medal in Hershey, even though his mind is taking things one step at a time.
“I think about winning states, but I also don’t let that be my main focus,” he said. “I see it as a check point to where I’m going. I just try and focus on day at a time and one match at a time.”
Matt Lackman (152) got some revenge from a district final loss to Nazareth’s Nate Stefanik with a rousing fall in 1:59 over his Blue Eagle counterpart in last week’s championship to round out Becahi’s trio of champions.
The Hawks had plenty of faces in the finals, as they produced seven in total, leaving four with silver medals.
Dante Frinzi (113) couldn’t shake Easton’s Braxton Appello for the second time in as many weeks, as Appello edged him with a third period reversal for a 4-2 win. Matt Mayer (120) lost to Nazareth’s Andrew Smith by a 9-3 decision.
Evan Gleason’s (138) bid to knock off Nazareth’s Dashawn Farber two weeks in a row fell short in a 5-3 loss.
Finally, Kenny Herrmann (132) lost a controversial, 1-0 decision to Stroudsburg’s Patrick Noonan. Herrmann appeared to have earned an escape before the third period buzzer sounded, but the call was waved off, leaving him with a difficult defeat.
The Hawks advanced nine wrestlers to Hershey in total including Andrew Harmon (126, fourth) and Jamir Jiminez (160, third).
Wrestling for 3A gets underway at 4 p.m. Thursday at Hershey’s Giant Center with the preliminary and first rounds. Friday’s quarterfinal round kicks off at 2:15pm with semifinals slated for Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
The championship round Saturday gets underway at 7 p.m. with the finals, third-place, fifth-place and seventh-place matches going off simultaneously.
