Stephen’s Place Renovations under way

Nestled on the hill at 729 Ridge St. in Bethlehem is a structured recovery house – Stephen’s Place – where men come to learn how to live a life free of chemical dependency and incarceration and become productive members of society.

Since 1993, Stephen’s Place has helped numerous men achieve success in their lives by teaching them life skills and connecting them to the 12-step program of Narcotics Anonymous. Those who are willing become good fathers, good brothers and good sons full of hope and self-worth. Stephen’s Place is run by Sister Virginia Longcope, the executive director, and Sherman Myers, the program coordinator.

Over the years, small adjustments have been made to improve the facility, but has initiated a new renovation of the entire first floor to accommodate events that take place at the home as well as making more efficient use of the space. The renovations will include new flooring, ceilings and lighting and a total reconstruction of the kitchen and laundry room.

Stephen’s Place is a nonprofit and operates only on donations and grants so there was a need to raise a lot of money to make this renovation happen.

“Through tireless grant writing and supportive donors we were able to reach our goal,” Myers said.

Thanks to gifts from the R.K. Laros foundation (for $14,000), Catholic Human Services in Pittston, N.J., ($13,000), a local anonymous foundation ($12,000) and other supportive donors ($20,000), the project began in late February.

“Thank you all for your generosity,” Myers said.
